Construction Details

• 11 oz black canvas: Mid-weight cotton canvas dyed in a flat matte black. No sheen, no texture — the surface reads as a single solid color from any distance. The canvas is treated with a light starch finish so the shoe holds its boxier shape out of the box.
• Gum rubber cupsole: The sole is a warm amber gum color, slightly translucent at the edges. The rubber wraps about 15 mm up the sidewalls and overlaps with the foxing tape. The gum compound is softer than standard white rubber — it grips better on smooth floors but picks up more scuffs over time.
• Extended toe cap: A 4 cm rubber bumper covers the entire toe area and curves up to meet the first eyelet row. It's applied during vulcanization, so the bond is chemical rather than adhesive. Resists peeling even with heavy toe-drag.
• Tonal stitching: All visible stitching is done in black thread that matches the canvas. The only color break on the entire shoe is the gum sole itself. Seams are double-stitched at the heel backstay and the vamp-to-quarter junction.
• Diamond-grid outsole: The tread is a pattern of shallow diamond shapes cut into the gum rubber. Designed for flat urban surfaces — sidewalks, subway platforms, office hallways. The gum compound offers decent wet-surface grip compared to harder rubber, but these aren't rain boots.

Care Instructions

• Black canvas shows lint and dust easily. A quick pass with a lint roller or a strip of packing tape removes surface debris between washes.
• For dirt and stains, scrub with a soft brush dipped in cold water and a few drops of dish soap. Avoid bleach — it will fade the black dye to grey.
• Safe to machine wash on a cold gentle cycle inside a mesh bag. Pull out the laces and sockliner first. Air dry only; heat from a dryer can shrink the canvas and warp the gum sole.
• The gum rubber sole will naturally darken and develop patina with wear. To clean off marks, wipe with a damp cloth and a tiny amount of rubbing alcohol.
